Am I rich? How to tell, with real numbers (2026)
Worldwide, $154,000 in net worth or $40,800 a year in income puts you in the top 10%. Four questions that decide whether you are rich, and where to check.
Short answer: it depends on who you compare yourself with, but the numbers are clear. Among all adults in the world, a net worth of $154,000 or an income of $40,800 a year puts you in the top 10%. The global top 1% starts at $1.31 million in net worth or $179,000 in income. Inside a rich country the bar is much higher: in the United States the top 10% starts at $1.19 million in net worth and $176,000 in income.
Most people who ask “am I rich?” live in a rich country and do not feel rich. You can be rich by world standards and ordinary at home at the same time. Four questions decide the answer.
1. Compared with whom?
People compare themselves with neighbours, colleagues and friends, not with the world. That makes almost everyone feel middle class. Here is the same amount seen through three lenses:
| Net worth per adult | In the world | In the United States | In the United Kingdom |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100,000 | top 14% | top 49% | bottom 47% |
| $250,000 | top 7% | top 36% | top 31% |
| $500,000 | top 3.7% | top 24% | top 17% |
| $1 million | top 1.5% | top 12% | top 7.2% |
| Income per adult, before tax | In the world | In the United States | In the United Kingdom |
|---|---|---|---|
| $25,000 | top 16% | bottom 24% | bottom 19% |
| $50,000 | top 7.9% | bottom 47% | top 49% |
| $100,000 | top 2.9% | top 26% | top 14% |
| $250,000 | top 0.5% | top 5.2% | top 2.1% |
A $50,000 income is ordinary in the United States but in the world’s top 7.9%. A net worth of $100,000 is close to the American median ($93,600), yet it puts you in the world’s top 14%.
2. Income or net worth?
Income is what comes in each year; net worth is what you would have left if you sold everything and paid off all debts. They answer different questions. A high earner with a large mortgage and student loans can have a low net worth; a retired homeowner can be wealthy on a small pension.
Wealth is far more unequal than income. The world’s richest 1% own 41% of all household wealth but receive 24% of all income (how much the top 1% own, by country). If you want to know whether you are financially secure, net worth is the better guide. If you want to know how your career compares, look at income.
3. What does money buy where you live?
$50,000 goes much further in Lisbon than in Zurich, and further in Mumbai than in Lisbon. Rankings at market exchange rates show how much your money is worth on world markets; rankings adjusted for purchasing power show what it buys at home. After a result, the calculator shows both: your rank at market exchange rates and your rank adjusted for the price level in your country.
4. How old are you?
Wealth builds over a lifetime. A 30-year-old with $100,000 is doing well; a 65-year-old with the same amount has less than most people their age in rich countries, because wealth usually peaks around retirement. For Norway the calculator can compare your income with your own age group using Statistics Norway data (income by age in Norway). For other countries, remember that the national thresholds cover all adults from 20 upwards.
So, are you rich?
A practical answer in three steps:
- Globally: if your net worth is above $154,000 or your income above $40,800, you are in the world’s top 10%. By income alone, that includes most adults in the United States (61%), the United Kingdom (62%), Germany (54%), Australia (63%) and Norway (85%).
- Nationally: check the top 10% and top 1% lines for your country in top 10% by country and top 1% net worth by country.
- Personally: “rich” also means not having to worry about money. A good rule of thumb is a net worth that could cover several years of spending without income.
