How it works
Tax is income tax (national and local) plus the employee’s social security contributions for a single employee with no children and only standard deductions, using each country’s 2026 rules. The region used for local taxes is listed below. Employer contributions, church tax and voluntary pensions are not included.
Buying power adjusts for price levels with the purchasing power parities of the World Inequality Database (household consumption, 2025): one euro buys more in Nigeria than in Switzerland. Housing in big cities can cost much more than the national average.
Rank there is your gross salary among all adults in that country: Statistics Norway for Norway, official person-level income statistics for Sweden, Denmark, Finland, the UK and the US, and the WealthPercentile model (a broad pre-tax income measure) elsewhere, which puts the same salary lower.
Salary needed there is the gross salary that gives the same take-home buying power as you have now, under that country’s tax rules.
This is an estimate for comparison, not tax advice. Real tax depends on your situation, deductions and the year’s final rules.
To compare whole tax systems (VAT, corporate tax, the tax wedge and the total tax burden), see tax by country.
Questions
Is a high salary in Switzerland worth more than in Norway?
Swiss salaries are high and taxes moderate, but prices are among the highest in the world, so the buying power of the same pay is lower than the exchange rate suggests. Enter your salary above to compare.
Where does my salary go furthest?
Usually in countries with low prices and moderate taxes, such as India, Mexico, Turkey or Thailand, where the same take-home pay buys several times more. Your rank there is also much higher.
Does this include social security?
Yes, the employee’s share: for example National Insurance in the UK, Social Security and Medicare in the US, trygdeavgift in Norway and CPF in Singapore (which is the employee’s own savings).
